The Romnja Feminist Library is proud to be part of the 30th edition of EUROPALIA, which this year turns its focus to Spain. From 8 October 2025 to 1 February 2026, EUROPALIA ESPAÑA will unfold a multidisciplinary programme exploring heritage and contemporary creation, opening new perspectives on what connects us and what challenges us. Within this framework, our participation brings Romani voices, memory, and cultural justice to the forefront of the festival.

In collaboration with EUROPALIA and Muntpunt, we present two events that highlight the richness and creativity of Spanish Roma communities: a roundtable on 600 years of Roma presence and creativity in Spain and an interactive workshop dedicated to the Caló language and its literary and musical influence.

The Longest Journey: 600 Years of Roma Presence and Creativity in Spain (ES/NL)

Roundtable discussion on Spanish Roma communities and their representation. Roundtable on 600 years of Romani presence and creativity in Spain.

600 years after their arrival in Spain, Romani communities continue to tell the story of their journey from India through art and culture. This roundtable explores how film, poetry, music, literature, and comics bring Romani memory and heritage to life, a celebration of resilience, beauty, and a living culture.

Join filmmaker Pilar Távora, writer and activist Noelia Cortés, and journalist and poet Joaquín López Bustamante as they share their perspectives on Romani representation and creativity: a unique opportunity to engage in dialogue with voices that illuminate the rich fabric of contemporary Romani history and culture.

The conversation will be moderated by Alba Hernández Sánchez from the Romnja Feminist Library.

The event will take place in Spanish, with translation into Dutch.

Language, Memory and Culture: Exploring the Caló Language (ES/NL)

An interactive workshop on the power and influence of Caló, the language of the Spanish Roma. Write new stories with us about culture and justice.

As part of EUROPALIA SPAIN and the commemoration of the 600th anniversary of the arrival of the Romani people in Spain, authors Noelia Cortés and Joaquín López Bustamante invite you to an interactive workshop on the influence of Caló, the language of Spanish Roma, in literature and music.

Discover the Romani origin of many everyday words, question preconceived stereotypes about the language, and learn how stories and perceptions about the Roma community can be challenged and rewritten.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of Romani communities. It is aimed at activists, creatives, educators, and anyone interested in unlearning biases and supporting cultural justice.

The workshop will be conducted in Spanish, with translation into Dutch.
